DrinkAwamori.com is a project that was born from a personal connection to the people of Okinawa and their culture.
Having grown up on the main island in Japan, I visited the main Okinawa island to visit my friend Natsuko when I was 20. Her family graciously invited me to stay with them for 3 weeks, where I had a truly memorable immersive experience in the local Ryuku culture…
Learning their native dance and participating in the summer festival;
Kayaking to a remote island to collect pure sea water in order to make fresh tofu the island way;
Eating endless piles of baby mangos collected from my friends aunt and uncle’s farm;
And of course, drinking their native spirit of choice – Awamori.
At the time, I didn’t realize how pivotal my introduction to Awamori would become. As an adult, I ended up spending countless evenings catching up with friends over glasses of Awamori, and it has become a cultural connector, giving me the opportunity to connect with people I may not have otherwise encountered.
A couple of years ago, I started my training as an Awamori Meister, which lead me to start Drink Awamori to share the rich history, tradition and culture surrounding this special beverage called Awamori.
My hope is that this website helps make Awamori more accessible to more people around the world.

20年以上も前、当時20歳の私は、友人を訪ねに沖縄本島の恩納村を訪れました。彼女の家族は快く私を3週間ものホームステイに招待してくれ、彼らのおかげで素晴らしい思い出となりました。
地元のエイサーを習い、夏祭りに参加したり；
カヤックで無人島まで漕いで、海水を汲んで島豆腐作りを教えてもらったり；
友人の叔母と叔父の農園で集めたマンゴーを山ほど食べたり；
そしてもちろん、地元の伝統的お酒である泡盛とも出逢いました。
当時、私は泡盛との出逢いがどれほど重要なものになるかは想像できなかったが、あれ以来泡盛を楽しみながら様々な友人と数え切れないほどの夜を過ごしました。泡盛はコネクターとなり、他では出会うことのなかった人々と繋がるきっかけとなりました。
そして2年ほど前、私は泡盛マイスターの資格の勉強を始め、それがきっかけでDrink Awamoriを始める事にしました。
泡盛という特別なお酒にまつわる豊かな歴史、伝統、文化を共有した気持ちでより多くの世界中の人々に泡盛を知ってもらえたらと言う思いで英語で泡盛の情報を発信していきたいと思います。
